Agency Type: Public The Altoona Unemployment Service Center provides unemployment insurance service to residents of a 17 county area which includes: Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Cameron, Centre, Chester, Clarion, Clearfield, Elk, Forest, Fulton, Huntingdon, Jefferson, McKean, Potter, Somerset, and Warren. All services are provided via telephone. Callers in the Altoona calling area use a local telephone number to access the service; callers from outside the Altoona area use a toll-free number. The automated phone system initially answers all calls, plays a recorded greeting for the caller and presents a menu from which the caller may select the service he/she needs. Based on the service designated by the caller, the call is then routed to a Service Center agent who will complete the claim process including detailed instructions for any further actions that need to be taken by the caller. The agent will then answer any questions the caller may have concerning unemployment compensation in general or the caller's specific concerns. This office also provides services to employers by providing unemployment claims information and offering assistance in the handling of layoffs, temporary and permanent shutdowns, payment of holiday and vacation benefits, treatment of bonus and incentive payments as they relate to the payment of unemployment insurance and the reporting of time and wage information. Application for unemployment compensation benefits may also be done via the Internet at www.dli.state.pa.us. Claims filed in this manner are transmitted to the service center that serves the claimants area of residence.
