Intermediate Unit 8 provides state mandated special education services that are requested by the Blair County public schools. Services are provided to children with the following disabilities: mental retardation, speech & language, deaf and hard of hearing, visually impaired, brain injured, physical disabilities, developmentally delayed, emotionally disturbed and autism. In addition, services are provided to incarcerated youth in county prisons and the Cresson Secure Treatment Unit.

Services provided to school districts upon request in the following areas: Psychological, social work, early intervention, multi-district classrooms for Life Skills and Multiple Disabilities support.  

The Intermediate Unit also provides federally mandated services to children 3 to 5 years of age with disabilities. Formal developmental and speech and language screening evaluations are given to all referred children. PA Certified special education teachers and speech and language teachers work with the children in the home or in center based programs. Individual education plans are written according to state guidelines. Service coordination is provided.
