Remember the magic of your first book?

First Book is a national nonprofit organization with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books.  First Book targets children and families enrolled in community literacy programs to ensure the development of both reading and family skills.  In neighborhoods across the country, Advisory Boards are working everyday to put books into the hands of children.

First Book-Blair County Advisory Board targets at-risk children and families in Blair County.  Board members are community members committed to literacy.   Their primary roles are identifying potential recipients and raising funds to supply essential books.

Organizations interested in applying for books from First Book should: incorporate reading/literacy as part of their program activities.  Serve children from low-income households (at least 80% of the participants).  Ensure that books provided by First Book are to become the property of the children participating in the applicant's program.  Provide multiple book distributions to each child in the program, with a minimum distribution cycle of one new book every six to eight weeks.

First Book supports programs serving the most difficult children to reach, and therefore recognizes some transitional programs including those in shelters, clinics, and soup kitchens will conduct regular book distributions to a changing population.  First Book supports the child's ongoing education outside of the classroom setting by providing books to after-school programs rather than for books to be used in the classroom.  The organization provides service to all individuals regardless of creed, color, sex, national origin or sexual orientation.  Because program administrators select the titles through First Book catalogs, First Book enables programs-often for the first time-to select books to integrate into curriculum and extend learning opportunities for children and families.

For more information on eligibility and for a grant application visit the First Book web site at www.firstbook.org or contact the telephone number or address of First Book-Blair County.
