The James E. Van Zandt VAMC provides general acute inpatient care and long term care, as well as comprehensive outpatient primary care. The medical center is a part of VA Healthcare - VISN 4, which includes nine other facilities in Butler, Clarksburg, Coatesville, Erie, Lebanon, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Wilkes-Barre, and Wilmington
PROGRAMS:
The medical center is comprised of 28 acute beds and 40 long term care beds. A wide range of inpatient services are provided, as well as a variety of general and specialized outpatient clinics.
INPATIENT CARE:
The medical center inpatient capacity consists of 68 operating beds, comprised of 28 acute hospital beds and 40 extended care beds. Special extended care programs include Respite Care, Hospice, and Home Based Primary Care.
PRIMARY CARE:
Outpatient services are provided through the emergency room, primary care, and specialty clinics. All active patients are enrolled in primary care. There are six primary care teams in place: three in-house, hospital based outpatient clinics (HBOCs) and one at each CBOC.

SPECIALTY CARE:
Specialty clinics are conducted by VA medical and surgical staff and consultant physicians. These clinics include behavioral health, cardiology, dental, dermatology, ear/nose/throat, gastroenterology, general gynecology, surgery, neurology, ophthalmology, optometry, orthopedics, podiatry, pulmonary, rehabilitation, urology, and women’s health. Veterans requiring services that are not available at the James E. Van Zandt VAMC may be referred to the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, contracted locally, or provided care via the fee basis program. These referrals may include allergy, cardiology, gastroenterology, infectious disease, plastic surgery, and organ-tissue-bone marrow transplant. The medical center maintains a Level III emergency room, which provides acute medical care for most emergencies 24 hours a day. Trauma patients are provided appropriate care in the emergency departments of nearby community hospitals.
Ancillary services, such as pathology/ laboratory medicine, and radiology are available on a continuous basis. In addition to diagnostic radiographic studies, the radiology service provides fluoroscopic, ultrasound, computerized tomography (CT) scans, and dual energy x-ray absortiometry (Dexascan) services.
