The March of Dimes provides professional and public education focusing on prenatal care and birth defect prevention. A general program entitled "BABIES AND YOU" provides in-company orientation on a variety of health topics and is presented at no cost to companies. March of Dimes is a unique partnership of volunteers and professionals that provides leadership in the prevention of birth defects and infant mortality.
MARCH OF DIMES BIRTH DEFECTS FOUNDATION
Supports starter grants and research grants for programs related to birth defects. Provides free literature, films, and VHS rentals on birth defects upon request. Sponsors medical and public educational conferences concerning the prevention of birth defects and infant mortality.
LOCAL SERVICES:
- Medical Conferences for perinatal health care professionals.
- Grants for medical professional preceptorships at major medical centers throughout the country.
- Youth conferences for junior and senior high school students concerning ways to prevent birth defects in their future families and in preventing teen pregnancy.
- Starter community service grants available for programs related to expanding access to prenatal care.
- Advocacy programs which support efforts to move maternal and infant health higher on the national and state policy and action agendas.
- A workplace prenatal education program for prospective parents.
- A nutrition program, conducted in conjunction with local supermarkets, teaching low-income, pregnant women how to properly shop for food by understanding packaging labels and wise alternatives to certain foods.
- An incentive program to entice pregnant women into receiving prenatal care.
- An information & referral system.
- Free literature.
- Free film and VHS rentals.
